Dishing Up Derby: This One's For The Girls...

admin | Thursday May 4, 2017

The Kentucky Derby posts have been drawn....but, before those cantering COLTS parade under the Twin Spires of Churchill Downs...it's ALL about the GIRLS.

The Longine's Kentucky Oaks has a long and storied tradition all its own.

The Longines Kentucky Oaks is America's premier race for 3-year old fillies. With a purse of 1 million COOL ones, it is also the most lucrative race for them. Traditionally held on the Friday before The Kentucky Derby, the race is modeled after The British Epsom Oaks and was first held on May 19th, 1875. The Longines Kentucky Oaks is also one of the longest held sporting events in The United States, and is one of the very few sporting events that occurs at the original site of its inception.

Aside from these credentials, it has also become one of the premier events to raise awareness for women's health issues...particularly breast and ovarian cancers. If you are fortunate enough to attend, you will find Churchill Downs decked out in PINKS of all shades, and guests are expected and encouraged to "get their PINK on". The event features a "Survivor's Parade", which honors breast and ovarian cancer survivors, prior to the running of The Longines Kentucky Oaks.

And, Kentucky Derby Day isn't the ONLY day that's all about fashion. One could argue that Kentucky OAKS Day is even more so. Oaks attendees are encouraged to "PINK OUT" in any and every manner possible...from hats to handkerchiefs...ties to toes...suits to socks.

Those who wish to may also enter the Longine's Kentucky Oaks Fashion contest, where the lucky winner is presented with a Longine's timepiece...and a whole lot of bragging rights.

For those who wish to wager on the fabulous fillies...you may get to know a little more about each of the contenders below. There is also an Oaks/Derby DOUBLE, where you may try your luck at picking the winner of both the Kentucky Oaks and The Kentucky Derby! Personally, we are going with Ever So Clever...for obvious reasons. Good Luck!
